Step 1: Expand What You Believe Is Possible

Before you can earn at a new level, you have to be able to imagine it, and do so without immediately talking yourself out of it.

This isn’t about blind optimism or magical thinking. It’s about exposure.

Seek out people who share your values and are earning at the level you want, holding the title you want, wielding the kind of influence that still feels slightly out of reach. Study them with genuine curiosity rather than veiled skepticism. They are not anomalies. They are previews.

When you find someone whose success genuinely surprises you, that surprise is data. It means your ceiling just got a crack in it. The right coach accelerates this process considerably, because you stop searching alone and start being shown exactly where the to find the openings.

You need one honest moment of “that could be me” before the committee in your head calls the meeting to order. Find that moment.

Step 2: Surface the Thoughts You’re Already Having

Write them down. All of them, including the ones that sound petty, irrational, or professionally embarrassing.

What if I’m not ready? What if they find out? What if I get it and then lose it?

You are not solving for these thoughts yet. You’re just getting them out of your head and onto paper, where they can be examined instead of obeyed. Unwritten fears run the show. Written ones are just sentences — and sentences can be rewritten.

Step 3: Build a Bridge Thought

Here’s where most advice goes wrong. You cannot leap from “I don’t know if I deserve this” to “I am unstoppable” without your brain filing an objection. It knows the difference between a belief and a performance.

What you need is a bridge thought: something true enough that your brain accepts it, and ambitious enough that it moves you forward.

Not: I will always be financially secure. Your brain will laugh.

Try instead: I know how to create value, and I’m getting better at capturing it.

That’s a thought a senior leader can stand behind. Build from there.

Step 4: Collect Evidence Deliberately

Your brain is an evidence-seeking machine. The question is are you directing it or letting it run on default? The brain, if left unsupervised, will operate on autopilot and use your thoughts to build a compelling case against your goals.

Every morning, give it a different assignment: Find proof today that I operate at the next level.

Then notice. A conversation you navigated with unusual authority. A decision that came easily because you’ve simply been doing this long enough. A moment where the room deferred to you.

These are not small things. They are the foundation of a new self-concept. The leader who earns at the level you want doesn’t wait for the title to act the part. She’s already collecting evidence that she’s that person.

Start today.
